About the LCSB

The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character.

The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is an interdisciplinary research centre of the University of Luxembourg.
We conduct fundamental and translational research in the field of Systems Biology and Biomedicine - in the lab, in the clinic and
in silico. We focus on neurodegenerative processes and are especially interested in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and their contributing factors. The LCSB recruits talented scientists from various disciplines: computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists, chemists, engineers, physicists and clinicians from more than 50 countries currently work at the LCSB. We excel because we are truly interdisciplinary, and together we contribute to science and society.

Successful candidates will join the Digital Medicine (dMed) group, led by Prof. Jochen Klucken, a joint group between the LCSB, and the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL). The group focuses on personalised and value-based digital healthcare. The dMed group aims to understand the benchmark framework of a new ecosystem for digital medicine. With a highly interdisciplinary team (e.g. neurologists, social scientists, data scientists, health economist), the dMed group addresses the questions of medical benefit, structural and procedural changes, as well as social acceptance of the resulting digital healthcare services. Your role

The Digital Medicine group (dMed) is looking for a highly motivated PhD Candidate (m/f/d) to explore the value and health economics linked to the digital transformation in medicine, with a special emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases. The research will focus on value-based health care (VBHC), innovative payment models, and integration of real-world data/outcomes (RWD) to drive cost-effective digital medical devices and related technical healthcare services. Of particular interest are applications of digital medicine in chronic and complex conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases, which present unique challenges for long-term care and cost management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct cutting-edge research in the health economics of digital medicine, employing real-world data (RWD) and evidence (RWE), with a focus on neurodegenerative disease management
  • Perform economic evaluations of digital medicine interventions, assessing both costs and health outcomes, with a view toward addressing the prolonged disease progression and care needs typical of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Explore emerging payment models within VBHC frameworks, specifically their suitability for digital medicine and real-world applications
  • Analyze policy and regulatory factors impacting the implementation and reimbursement of digital health technologies, and how they relate to real-world evidence generation
  • Publish research results and present them at national and international conferences
  • Contribute to reports and research publications
  • Engage in knowledge-sharing and dissemination of results with relevant stakeholders
  • Write a cumulative PhD thesis

The open position is part of the dHealthPD PEARL project, funded by the FNR.

  • An understanding of relevant microeconomic concepts (e.g., mechanism design, game theory, decision modeling) would be advantageous
  • Excellent verbal communication and academic writing skills in English
  • Passion for healthcare innovation, digital technologies, and their economic implications
